Jones Scores 16, Chargers Improve to 6-0 With Win over Blueboys

Sophomore forward James Jones (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) scored 16 points off the bench and was one of four Chargers in double figures as the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team stayed undefeated with a 77-71 victory at Illinois College JV on Monday.
Jones led the Chargers (6-0) — who are among others receiving votes for the second straight week in the NJCAA Division II rankings — in scoring while hitting 8 of 15 shots in addition to recording four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Sophomore Carter Fayhee (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) scored 13 and had a team-high six boards, and sophomore guard Scott Gowan (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East) also had 13 points, with his coming in a reserve in role.
Sophomore Elias Akale (Ashdod, Israel/Mekif Tet) was the fourth Charger in double figures, scoring a season-high 11 points. Sophomore Noah Young (Colfax, Ill./Ridgeview) had eight points, five rebounds and a team-best five assists for Sandburg.
The Chargers held on after taking a 35-32 lead into halftime and shot an even 50 percent from the field, going 31 of 62. Sandburg has shot 47 percent or better in all six of its games this season, and the Chargers have hit at least 50 percent of their shots on three occasions.
The six-point game was the closest of the season for Sandburg, which entered having outscored opponents by an average of 82-56 and second in the nation in points allowed per game.
EUREKA JV GAME POSTPONED
Tuesday’s scheduled game at home against Eureka JV has been postponed. A makeup date has yet to be announced.
UP NEXT FOR SANDBURG
3 p.m. Saturday at fellow unbeaten Milwaukee Area Technical (3-0), the sixth-ranked team in Division II. The game will be played at Alverno College.
